Chvrches

Before Chvrches, Iain Cook was a part of two bands, Aereogramme and The Unwinding Hours. Mayberry completed a four-year law degree followed by a Masters in Journalism. This achievements led Lauren Mayberry into a career in freelance journalism for several year. She has played piano since she was a kid, while drums since she was in her teenage years. Before Chvrches,

Mayberry was a part of two local bands, ‘Boyfriend/Girlfriend’ and ‘Blue Sky Archives’. She was the vocalist, drummer, and keyboardist for the bands.

It all started when Cook started a new project with Doherty and asked Mayberry to sing for a few demos.

They wrote for the demos together for 7 or 8 months in a basement studio in Glasgow, Scotland. They decided to form a new band after the sessions proved to be great.[6] They chose the name Chvrches, using a Roman "v" to avoid with actual churches on internet searches. They have also expressed that ‘Chvrches’ "has no religious connotation, [they] just thought it sounded cool".

Chvrches is known for its ‘clean sound’, their music style is frequently tagged as synthpop or electronic. Neon Gold, a record label which is based in New York City, described Chvrches’ sound as "an insane hurricane of kinetic pop energy. Kitty Empire, a British music critic, wrote that they "make accessible electro-pop that's only just short of undoubtly out-of-the-box". Wired, a music magazine stated that Chvrches’ Every Open Eye is the the album that "cements the group as today's heir apparent to Depeche Mode, New Order, and other titans of British electronic music."

When Chvrches plays live,

Mayberry : Lead vocals and occasionally plays synthesisers and samplers.

Cook : Plays synthesisers, guitar, bass, and also performs backing vocals.

Doherty : Plays synthesisers and samplers, and also performs backing vocals and

sometimes lead vocals.
